How to gear up for Q4: August 2023 Newsletter

Something funny happened.

For a long time (far too long for me to comfortably admit publicly), I've intended to produce my own content. I've been a guest on numerous YouTube channels, podcasts, webinars, live stages, you name it. But I always found the best excuses for why now was not the right time to create content for my own platforms. Underneath the excuses there was a strong fear of failure and looking stupid.

Two weeks ago, I decided enough was enough. It didn't matter if I felt like I had nothing to say or if my lighting wasn't the best. I committed to the act of creation for creation's sake. I turned it into an experiment - to test what I feel drawn to creating. I removed myself from the outcome. Doing a good job would no longer be determined by whether anyone watched, commented, or liked.

So I forced myself to record a video. And then I forced myself to start engaging on LinkedIn. And then I forced myself to post on LinkedIn. My fear of having nothing to say vanished. I'd hit the creativity main line.

We're taught that we should wait for the muse to strike. That is a truly terrible piece of folklore that likely foils many a creative pursuit. The fact of the matter is that we generate creativity by doing. When we commit to the doing, the creativity follows.

Countless successful creatives say exactly this. That you must commit to the act of showing up and putting pen to paper. I knew this, but I lead myself to believe otherwise.

So why share this?

  • After talking with a number of people about, this seems like something that a lot of us struggle with. If that's you, what are you waiting for?
  • Publicly committing to a thing helps you stick to it. I''m feeling motivated now, but I know creative energy ebbs and flows, so I'm saying this to keep myself accountable.
  • I'd love to invite you on this journey with me. If you want to stay up to date on the latest thoughts, ideas, and e-commerce strategies, let's connect on LinkedIn!

And now, onto the highlights:

1. Reviews, they are a changin' - maybe!

Amazon has been testing a few interesting review updates, including:- Removing review count from search results page.
- Reformatting the way that total review average displays on the search results page to show a single star, the average review, and total reviews.
- Using generative AI for review highlights.

It's unclear whether these are here to stay or if they'll be gone by tomorrow. But, these could be great for both customer experience and disincentivizing review manipulation.

2. Cover your bas(e)ics!

When you're looking to unlock hidden potential in your business, the basics is always one of the best places to start. No matter what stage you're at in your ecommerce journey, there is value to be gained in strengthening your foundations. As the gift-giving season approaches, it's an important time to make sure you have a solid groundwork to leverage your full Q4 potential. With this in mind, I've launched a new YouTube series diving deep into Amazon Listing Optimization. First up:

Also, while you're at it, I'd greatly appreciate it if you'd subscribe to my channel. It would make my day!

3. Current read:

In my quest to drill back to basics, I thought I'd pick up a book from one of the longtime names in the digital marketing world, Russel Brunson. With Traffic Secrets, Brunson tries really hard to make this book a piece of evergreen content on filling your funnels with high quality traffic. The first half does a great job of that. The second half already reads a little dated. Fortunately, he puts a strong emphasis on understanding fundamentals that help to keep the book still decently relevant. With that, I wouldn't call this a must-read.

4. Double your conversion rate!

That's what we did in our recent case study with Helium 10! Listen to this episode of the Serious Seller Podcast where Bradley Sutton and I discuss the changes we made to achieve an immediate impact on the listing performance.

5. Are you a 7- or 8- figure business located on the East Coast?
