With all of the stress and uncertainty happening right now, Amanda Goetz shared an idea that helped me zoom out, and perhaps it will for you, too.

We have periods when we’re cultivating seeds, and others where we get to enjoy the harvest.

The challenge lies in knowing whether those seeds will ever break through the dirt. 

When we plant a seed, we don’t know whether it’ll ever germinate, let alone bear fruit. We can be disciplined with our commitment to water, weed, and nurture the soil. And still, a big weather event, a bad seedling, or cucumber beetles may prevent those seeds from ever reaching maturity.

We need discipline AND faith to toil through the cultivation stage. Because when you can’t see beneath the surface, you don’t know whether you need more time, or if it’s time to start over.

For over a year I’ve been in that place as I build something(s) new. I tilled the soil. I checked the pH. I’m regularly watering my seedlings. Some days with wholehearted belief. Other days with commitment to the routine, when faith was nowhere to be found.

And then, some big things started clicking. It felt like out of nowhere, like when a seed finally breaks through the dirt.

Whether it’s time for you to plan a new garden, to tend your seedlings, or to enjoy the bounty of your harvest, I wish for you the perfect mix of discipline and faith to keep cultivating.

Because sometimes, a sprout is just beneath the surface, about to break through.
