Gone: October 2025 Newsletter

September filled me up, and then promptly emptied me out. By October, my ambitions had run my creative reserves dry.

I shouldn’t have been surprised.

At least once a year, I find myself wondering, “Where oh where has my creativity gone?”

The schedule ratchets up, more projects get added to the plate, obligations pile on…until my mind sounds the alarm: there’s nothing left. No creativity to be found.

Clawing my creativity back also follows a familiar cycle. First there’s the despair, the certainty it’s gone for good. Then the exhaustion. But eventually, if I’m patient enough to slow down, the glimmers begin to appear. At first so small and delicate that the slightest demand or expectation might send them into hiding.

But eventually, with enough time and patience, I return to myself. I’m reminded that ideas are bountiful. That creativity is a complicated gal: impossible to force, but also not something to wait for tirelessly. She needs commitment and dedication, mixed with space to move freely and mingle with ideas until sparks fly.

Here’s how I court my creativity:

  • Do new and different things (musical theater dance class, to be exact)

  • Reconnect with friends

  • Rest

  • Feed my brain with ideas

  • Create space for boredom

  • Walk without doing anything else

  • Rearrange my schedule

How do YOU reignite your creative well when it runs dry? Reach out. I’d love to know!

And now, onto October’s rundown…

Brushing Up

Saying you’ve read a book 5 years ago doesn’t mean that those lessons are still vividly accessible. As I work on a new project, I’ve been re-reading some of my favorite marketing books, like this classic and my most referenced book. What do you think I should add to the list?
